Blizzard Entertainment posted a job opening on their website for a mobile game developer proficient with Unity to help develop an unannounced mobile MMORTS. Beyond the actual job listing, there’s been no official announcement. Check out the actual job listing (link 404s now, but we have it saved here):
Given the immense success of mobile strategy games like Game of War and Clash of Clans the fact that Blizzard is finally working on a mobile strategy game shouldn’t come as a surprise. Both Game of War and Clash of Clans make upwards of $1 billion a year which is actually more money than what World of Warcraft makes!
While no specific IP has been cited in the job posting, I suspect that Blizzard will use the Warcraft universe in their upcoming mobile MMORTS as Warcraft best lends itself to a Clash of Clans style game due its fantasy setting and rich universe that many are familiar with. Time will tell what kind of game Blizzard ends up unveiling. It may play nothing like Clash of Clans / Game of War which are both infamous for being extremely pay to win. Given Blizzard’s reputation it’s quite possible that they may try to differentiate themselves from other mobile strategy games with a focus on fairness, but we’ll have to wait and see.
