Set seven years in the past, the story sets some of the team’s original members up for one of their most difficult fights: the King’s Row uprising.
McCree, Reaper, Soldier:76, Ana, Mercy, Winston and Tracer all star in the story, which is available as an animatic on Madefire. An extremist set of Omnics attacked London, leaving McCree stranded and the crew back home in Switzerland left to decide whether they should override orders and step in.
The story of Overwatch as we know has always involved a battle between humans and robots over the latter group’s rights, but “Uprising” establishes that these are Omnics of an extremist variety. (Or, as Ana likes to call them, terrorists.) This rare look at the characters’ history adds some new color to the existing fight.
It also provides some more context to fans who just dig playing the game and get hyped over its new content updates. The Overwatch Twitter account teased that a special mission would be declassified sometime on April 11, and it would have something to do with the seven-year-old King’s Row uprising. “Uprising” is clearly tied to that event, whatever it may be — and game director Jeff Kaplan has teased that it has huge narrative implications for Overwatch.

“We’ve been hearing a lot of desire for more story,” he told PCGamesN in a video interview. “People wanna know more about the story of Overwatch. They wanna know more about the past of Overwatch. I think they want to know more about what’s going on with Omnics and humans in this world, and I think a lot of that will be answered for them.”
Kaplan also hinted in the interview that this comic, then-unreleased, would be among the best comics the team had ever done. It’s certainly got some of the prettiest art seen in the long-running series, as well as one of the most consequential storyline.
Kaplan offered another big tease about the event, this time for Widowmaker fans: Expect a new skin for her during next week’s event, Kaplan said. Players who prefer any of the heroes featured in the comic should keep their fingers crossed for their old-school looks to appear in-game as well.
